2010
Le Mans Series ~ Round 1, Paul Ricard
The
opening round of the 2010 season was staged
at the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track
(HTTT) at Le Castellet, in southern France.
The track nestles between low peaks atop a
plateau in the foothills of the Alpes
de Haute Provence, and while often bright
and sunny, the area is also prone to blustery
winds and squally showers. For many years
the HTTT was the exclusive domain
of Formula 1 teams, who exploited the track's
many and varied circuit configurations to
carry out intensive testing. Since 2009 Paul
Ricard has opened its gates to racing again,
and also to the public, although spectator
amenities remain limited. Trackside facilities,
however, are excellent, and with regular grids
of around 50 sports and GT cars anticipated,
a new pit garage extension has just been completed.
The large Le Mans Series entry is sign of
a continued strength in this style of racing
in Europe, and many of the teams present were
looking to use their experiences at Paul Ricard
as preparation for the Le Mans 24 Hours in
June.
